Actraiser was one of the most successful early SNES games and draws upon both the side-scrolling platform action titles of the time, as well as the strategy and building elements of games such as SimCity. You play "The Master", who is to all intents and purposes <em>God</em>, and must save the world from evil (no surprise there then).
You purge the land by sending your spirit into a human warrior and have a big sword and some magical powers.
This makes up the side side-scrolling part of the game and puts the player in many different locations, such as swamps, forests, pyramids and snowy mountains.
As you eliminate evil from different parts of the land, you allow villagers to return and rebuild their towns and cities.
This leads on to the strategy element where you control an angel and help guide the villagers in their town building. This includes performing miracles to assist them in whatever they do.
